Take a stroll back though the mists of time with research archaeologist Andrea Frankham-Hughes and dive into Portland’s deep history to discover the hidden stories of the north of the island in prehistoric time.
In the mid 1800s the areas around the Verne were intensively quarried revealing areas rich in burials and significant artefacts, from the enigmatic beehive huts to Iron Age collars, mirrors, coins and ingots. Large Iron Age and Romano British cemeteries were unearthed but are now mostly forgotten. Thes along with earlier lost barrows and stone circles reveal the fascinating lives and deaths of the people of the island who came before us.
Andrea has been exploring prehistoric Portland for almost a decade and is currently postgraduate researcher at Bournemouth University specialising in prehistoric Portland with a current focus on Iron Age and Romano British Durotrigian burials
